Järnmalmer was named as the scrap recycling company of the year for 2019 by Avfall Sverige (Swedish Waste Management), for its innovative thinking in the waste area with its concept of “Together towards zero waste”. Shortly afterwards, we developed the “Swipe for zero service”, an application that the customer can order and which is mounted on our containers and hooklift bodies.
This means that as a customer, by swiping the application directly on the container we automatically quickly empty it, and recycle the material and climate compensate 100% of the carbon dioxide emissions that arise from scrap waste to new remelted material. The system has been developed together with Chalmers Teknologkonsulter, is unique and we see great interest in the market.
But how does it work in practice? We went to one of our customers, Nordiska Ventilationsprodukter, to hear how the product is used and what the outcome has been. We caught up with the company’s CEO Sandra Andreasson on an autumn day in Göteborg to ask a few questions about “Swipe for zero” but also how the company thinks about environmental issues and the future.
What do you think about “Together towards zero waste”?
“It’s a very good initiative from Järnmalmer. We care about the environment at Nordiska Ventilationprodukter and want to be involved and contribute. When we heard about Järnmalmer’s plan where we can climate compensate for our transport and the handling of our iron scrap, we got in touch. As the climate looks today, we all need to help each other with what we can.
We can follow our material flow every day on Järnmalmer’s portal. We can also see our climate footprint there on a daily basis.”
The service also includes our “Swipe for zero”. What do you think about it?
“The swipe function on our containers works really well. We receive a large flow of material and this makes our handling more efficient. When we have swiped on the container, we don’t have to do anything else, as the container is automatically emptied and the carbon dioxide emissions that arise in the recycling process are climate compensated.”
How do you communicate about your environmental work?
“With regards our recycling, we use the logo “Together towards zero waste” in our printed material etc., where we talk about what the concept means and how we work with environmental issues. In the past, environmental work was something good to show off. Today there are completely different demands from clients, therefore it is a great advantage to be at the forefront and show our stakeholders that we do more than what the law requires.”
